QR codes

It is now possible to easily encode links or arbitrary text as QR codes, allowing mobile devices such as smartphones to read them from printouts with their camera.

Infoland integrates RealObjects edit-on® NG in its document management system iDocument

Saarbrücken and Veldhoven Infoland - a Dutch independent software vendor - has developed a document management solution called iDocument, which is highly successful in the Dutch and Belgium healthcare sector. iDocument offers WYSIWYG editing of HTML documents, powered by edit-on® NG. Infoland has realised seamless integration of RealObject’s editor into its own solution, using the available API’s and customization options of edit-on® NG. This has been the result of close cooperation between RealObjects and its OEM-partner Infoland.

The document management system iDocument is based on Microsoft® ASP.NET technology, with a Microsoft® SQL Server back-end. Although all kinds of documents can be stored in iDocument, most customers primarily use documents in HTML format. The document content is stored in the SQL Server database, which also contains version history, metadata, managed hyperlinks, permissions and audit trails.

Infoland integrated the edit-on® editing component in its ASP.NET web application. When an HTML document is edited, its content is retrieved from the database and loaded into the editor. When the document is saved, the modified content is retrieved back from the editor, parsed for newly added hyperlinks and then stored in the database again.

The user interface of the editor was customized; the standard icons were replaced by icons matching the look & feel of iDocument and toolbars and menus were modified to fit Infoland’s needs. In order to keep the layout of documents uniform, various layout features were made unavailable for end users; instead the usage of layout profiles (like "Heading 1", "standard text", "important text") was offered, including an administrative feature for editing and creating layout profiles.

Infoland successfully embedded edit-on® NG into its document management system iDocument, resulting in an powerful and very user friendly editing environment. Seamless integration of the editor in iDocument was made possible by the extensive customisation options of edit-on NG and outstanding support provided by RealObjects.

TrueType collections (TTC) could not be used in PDFreactor 5 anymore. We have released hotfix version 5.0.5812.1 which resolves this issue. Additionally the version of the .NET wrapper DLL has been updated to 5.

Saarbrücken RealObjects today announced the official release and immediate availability of PDFreactor 5.0, the newest iteration of its highly successful HTML to PDF conversion engine. PDFreactor 5.0 offers even more exciting and innovative features, paired with improved performance.

The new features include:

Sessions, request headers and cookies

It is possible to set arbitrary HTTP headers for all connections established by PDFreactor. A convenience method for setting cookies is also included. This enables you to, e.g. pass a session ID to PDFreactor.

Support for HTTP authentication

PDFreactor enables you to convert documents (incl. style sheets and images), which require a password for their HTTP connections. The supported authentication schemes are Basic and Digest.

Automatic font fall-back

If the specified or default font cannot display certain characters in the document, one or more fall-back fonts are automatically determined, i.e. PDFreactor will search the available fall-back fonts until one is found containing the glyph and will use that font for rendering the missing character. A list of preferred fall-back fonts can be specified via CSS or the API.

PDF overlay

PDFreactor can add content of an existing PDF file as the background or foreground for content being converted. This functionality also allows you to include watermark/confidential notes as a background or generate sophisticated form letters for mailings, publicity campaigns etc.

Enhanced PDF merging

PDFreactor is able to append any number of existing PDF documents in any order to your source document.

Multiple pages per sheet (n-up printing)

N-up printing enables you to place two or more pages on one sheet (physical page). So, you have the ability produce multi-page layouts or compact PDF documents, e.g. to implement a draft/economy print mode within your application.

Rearrange order of pages

Using this functionality you can modify the order in which the pages appear in the resulting PDF document. You can even repeat or remove pages.

Using the combination of the rearrange and multi-page features allows the implementation of complex business use cases, e.g. the creation of ready-to-print business card and booklet sheets.

Digital signature

PDFreactor allows you to digitally sign your PDFs with a X.509 certificate. The signature ensures that the document has been created by the author who is specified in the certificate. Moreover it ensures that the document has not been tampered with after its creation.

Improved shrink-to-fit

In order to avoid elements (e.g. text boxes or images) with fixed pixel widths (common on legacy web pages) exceeding the page size PDFreactor can automatically adjust the DPI value for pixels. Thus, everything will properly fit on the pages. It is also possible to manually specify the DPI value.

Improved layout and better performance

Due to partial reengineering we were able further increase PDFreactor’s layout capabilities and accuracy and at the same time also its performance, especially in terms of conversion speed.

Automatic detection of exceeding contents

In case an element (i.e. text or an image) exceeds a page or the border of a page content, an optional warning can be logged. Detailed information about those elements can also be retrieved programmatically. Thus, you will know whether the content fits without manually inspecting the entire resulting PDF. Retrieving the total number of pages is also possible.

Saarbrücken RealObjects today announced the official release of edit-on NG 2.0. The new major release edit-on NG 2.0 is available from the RealObjects website for immediate download.

RealObjects edit-on NG 2.0 offers exciting new features. The highlights of the new version include a major facelift for the user interface and extensive access to specific elements using the new XPath-API.

Among the new features are:

User interface:

Support for tool bar icons with text.
A new icon size (tiny) allows having 3 rows in a pane/subpanel.
A "Page of Pages" counter in the status bar display the current position in the document.
Easy access to the document or fragment language by a new area in the status bar.
A new structural element (subpanel) in the tool bar allows to mix different icons sizes in one pane.
Style Template Groups in Style Template Panel are now collapsible.
Action icons are now displayed in the context menu.

Special Character Dialog:

The dialog is now completely Java based.
Adds the possibility to limit fonts by configuring a global font list for all font selection Userinterface elements.
Adds the possibility to configure default Unicode Character Sets (Subsets of the Unicode character range)
Adds the possibility to configure Custom Character Sets.

XPath Support:

Select all elements matching an XPath expression.
Place the caret at the start or at the end of the first element matching an XPath expresion.
Retrieve or manipulate the attributes of elements using XPath expressions.

Additional Features

Improved filtering of documents imported from MS Office products. edit-on NG 2.0 now offers new methods to import MS Office documents.
Added new event handler that fires when content is pasted into the editor. This event handler allows integrators to manipulate the pasted content before it actually inserted.
Instead of uploading images to a repository, it is now possible to automatically convert all images to base 64 encoded data URIs.

edit-on Pro 5.3.250 hotfix available, resolves issue with latest Java update 1.6.0_24

With edit-on Pro 5.3.249 or earlier versions an exception occurred with Java update 1.6.0_24 when an edit-on Pro process triggered by Javascript required elevated privileges, for instance when loading resources from an external URL.

Today we have released an edit-on Pro 5 hotfix version 5.3.250 which resolves this issue.

The new edit-on Pro 5.3.250 package is now available for download from:

We recommend all edit-on Pro 5 customers to update to this latest edit-on Pro 5 version as soon as possible.

Important Notice: Java exception with latest Java update 1.6.0u24 and edit-on Pro. Do not update your Java Runtime at this time.

Due to changes in the latest Java Update 1.6.0_24 exceptions occur in edit-on Pro 5 e.g. when loading content or images sources from external URL. Because of that, edit-on Pro 5.3.249 or earlier versions can't be used with Java 1.6.0_24. We recommend not to update to Java 1.6.0_24 at this time or to downgrade to Java 1.6.0_23. We are working on this issue with highest priority and plan to release a hotfix release which makes edit-on Pro 5 compatible with Java Update 1.6.0_24 as soon as possible, most probably already early next week. We will inform all customers as soon as a edit-on Pro 5 hotfix release is available.

RealObjects' editor framework Martha at the European Patent Office

Saarbrücken and Munich The European Patent Office has embedded a RealObjects' Martha-based XHTML editor into Trimaran, a major application deployed to 4000 patent examiners.

Though written communication between EPO patent examiners and their counterparts, patent attorneys or inventors, takes place within a clear procedural framework ruled by patent law, a large editorial freedom has to be given to the examiners. Each patent application may lead to the examiner having to write several pages of individually-tailored, case-specific technical and legal argumentation. This "free text" has to be combined with patent procedural data items and inserted into predefined forms. This writing task is supported by the new editor Martha.

Martha forms part of Trimaran, a major JAVA application for examiners which has been deployed over the period 2009-2010. This new editor had to provide EPO-specific functionality and yet still behave like the off-the-shelf editors that people are familiar with.

Important Notice: Security Warning with Java 1.6.0u19 and edit-on Pro (Update)

With the Java Update 1.6.0_19 a new warning dialog was introduced, which is displayed when an applet uses both unsigned and signed code (so called ?mixed code?). This dialog appears when starting edit-on Pro, even though edit-on Pro contains properly signed code only. This behavior is a bug in the Sun Java VM which has been fixed in Java 1.6 Update 20, see: http://www.java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/6u20.html. Therefore we recommend to update to Java 1.6 Update 20 as soon as possible.

Saarbrücken RealObjects today announced the official release of PDFreactor 4.0. The new major release PDFreactor 4.0 is available from the RealObjects website for immediate download. The highlights of the new version are:

PDF/A Support

PDFreactor 4 supports creating PDF/A-compliant files. To create PDF/A-1a (ISO 19005-1 Level a) compliant files, only one specific parameter in your PDFreactor integration is necessary.
RealObjects is a member of the PDF/A Competence Center.

Professional Printing

Multi-column layout typically used in newspapers and magazines is supported (according to CSS 3 "Multi-Column Layout").

Footnotes can be added using simple CSS (according to CSS 3 "Generated Content for Paged Media").
Specifying the PDF page boxes allows the content to bleed off trim area.
Printer marks including trim marks, bleed marks, registration marks and color bars can be added to the pages.
There is the option to convert color key words into CMYK colors.

Further noteworthy improvements

PDFreactor 4 includes extended support for non-Latin content. This includes better handling of various document encodings as well as bidirectional content.

Form support has been extended: Non-interactive form and PDF-forms can be styled and form elements adopt their names from the input document.

Saarbrücken and Karlsruhe Besides detailed product information VBL offers its insured persons, employers and pensioners the possibility to calculate tariff premiums and payment plans for company pension plan products online via its website www.vbl.de. Firstly the data which are important for the calculation are requested using various HTML forms. A printable insurance offer (PDF) is then created from the collected data in real time on the part of the server by using the PDFreactor. This offer can then be downloaded directly by the customer or is sent by post via an automated process. The project was carried out by SITEFORUM GmbH by order of the VBL.

With RealObjects PDFreactor® VBL has supplemented the web-based offer process to an optimum extent. Compared with the Open Source Tool HTMLDOC, PDFreactor® offers a multitude of benefits. This relates above all to the possibility to be able to define page layout and styles using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). It was only through this that it was possible to exactly implement the offer templates requested by VBL. The tool on the part of the server enables a fast, realizable, cost-efficient and high-quality printing functionality within the VBL offer creation process.

New Text Editor in TopEase®

In 2006 more than 6.4 million visitors visited the SoftGuide portal to research commercial software solutions. More than 130,000 customer enquiries were submitted via the contact form alone.

Media partnerships with leading publishers such as the Konradin IT publishing group, IDG, CNET, Hoppenstedt and many others also mean that the coverage of the SoftGuide software guide is substantially higher than that of other comparable software catalogues in the German-speaking market.

Together with a great variety of information and opportunities to download demo versions, plus supplementary information material and user reports, the SoftGuide offers its visitors so-called software exposés for downloading. These are PDF files containing details of suppliers and program descriptions of the software product being investigated, in printable format.

The tool previously used to generate these documents only achieved an imperfect conversion of the existing HTML files into PDF format. Much of the source text data used for illustrations and diagrams in the HTML document was displayed in the wrong place or was incorrectly aligned after conversion. As a result, only around 50% of the potential documents were of sufficiently high quality to be made available for downloading. The remaining thousands of documents had to be checked and revised manually at great expense.

As the software exposés are very popular with users and generate a substantial proportion of all the enquiries for software products, the large number of program entries without an exposé was costing a great many leads - and therefore sales - every day.

After just a few weeks, the software exposés have already become an important element of SoftGuide's lead acquisition. The main highlight of the new version is the editor's improved loading time across all Java versions, especially noticeable when using Java 1.6. Deutsche Post World Net integrates RealObjects PDFreactor® in Intranet application "PDF Basket"

Saarbrücken and Bonn Alongside its very extensive Internet presence, Deutsche Post World Net operates a corporate Intranet of more than 70,000 XHTML pages. The uniform layout is defined by a single CSS style sheet. As well as being able to access Intranet content using their browser, above all field staff need to be able to compile the contents of selected pages in printed form.

Printing these out using a browser on the one hand took a great deal of time, and on the other hand the quality suffered in terms of a compact way of compiling the content to be printed. For this reason the function "PDF Basket" was developed especially for the Intranet. Similarly to a shopping basket, staff can now collect the content of any Intranet pages they want in the "PDF Basket" at a click of their mouse and then after a final check print them or send them as one continuous document. Pagination and printing are achieved using RealObjects PDFreactor.

The "PDF Basket" solution was implemented by the application maintenance provider GFT. The final decision for an implementation of functionality based on PDFreactor was made after a prototype implementation. The advantages of using the PDFreactor functionalities lay in particular in the speed at which this was feasible and the high capability of integration into the existing application, as well as being able to benefit from the continuous development of the PDFreactor solution.

Saarbrücken and Frankfurt In high-volume corporate credit loans or when the Bank wishes to the spread the risk, several credit institutions may share the financing. A syndicated loan agreement forms the basis of this type of financing and is usually issued in cooperation with the local cooperative banks. DZ BANK was quick to recognise the advantages of a web-based system for processing the relevant credit applications.

For this reason an appropriate Business Process Management (BPM) System was developed and successfully introduced at the end of 2003, in collaboration with entory AG (a former company of the Deutsche Börse Group) and TIBCO-Staffware. This web-based system represents a successful transition from a paper-oriented system to a system based on web technology, with many advantages, especially in the reduction of processing times.

Saarbrücken RealObjects today released new maintenance versions of its edit-on product line, including edit-on Pro 3.x, edit-on Pro 2.x and edit-on JavaBean SDK. The new versions are free updates for all customers who bought a license with a valid software maintenance subscription. Because the new versions include some performance improvements and bugfixes, RealObjects highly recommends to upgrade as soon as possible from all previous versions. A new release of RealObjects edit-on Pro 3.x is available for immediate download from the RealObjects website.

The new release 3.1.181 is a free update for all customers who bought edit-on Pro 3.0. Customers who are using edit-on Pro 2.x with a valid software maintenance subscription may upgrade to edit-on Pro 3.1 using the form in the "Support" section of our website.

Users currently evaluating the software may also download the new version.

Saarbrücken RealObjects has officially released Ver. 2.1 of its WYSIWYG HTML Rich-Text-Editor Applet edit-on Pro. The Applet provides the familiar editing/formatting functions that users expect from WYSIWYG HTML or word processing editors - across platforms, without installation of client-side software, and also offers all basic formatting options such as: bold, italic, underline, colors, fonts, and the insertion of text, images, controls and hyperlinks.

Furthermore, the editor provides flexible editing of HTML tables. Not only can the user insert tables on the fly, but can also modify existing table structures by adding, deleting or formatting table cells, rows or columns. The main enhancements in Ver. 2.1 are:

SYSTEMS 2001 - A big success for RealObjects

Munich In spite of problems currently faced by the IT industry, the SYSTEMS 2001 trade show was a considerable success for RealObjects! From October 15-19th the latest version of edit-on Pro - the market leading platform independent WYSIWYG editing solution - was enthusiastically received by business and industry professionals at the international fairground in Munich. Customers and prospective buyers were keen to learn more about the products' new features, such as enhanced HTML

functionality (including COLSPAN/ROWSPAN and VALIGN) and support of the Apple MacOS 9 platform. The release of version 2.1 is scheduled for the end of October. Further improvements such as style sheet and enhanced XML support will be incorporated into the next major release of edit-on Pro which is scheduled for December 2002.

Jakarta From August 26th to September 2nd 2000, the state of Saarland (Germany) embarked on a market investigation through Singapore and Indonesia. Saarland's Minister of Economic Affairs, Dr. Hanspeter Georgi, lead the operation, along with various state delegates and businessmen from different parts of the country.
