edit-on NG - Licensing FAQ

4.3 What is a server name?

A server name is the name that the edit-on NG user/author types within the browser to call/load the applet. For example, the applet is hosted on the Intranet server dev.realobjects.com. The IP number of this server is 195.125.217.118, while the server is also known under the abbreviation snoopy. As part of a web-based application, the applet will be called/loaded through the ASP-page input.asp.

If you want to call/load the applet via browser by typing http:/dev.realobjects.com/input.asp, dev.realobjects.com has to be included in the edit-on NG license key. In case you want to call/load the applet via http/195.125.217.118/input.asp and/or http/snoopy/input.asp, 195.125.217.118 and/or snoopy has to be included in the license key as well.

The server name can also be a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) which is that portion of an Internet Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that fully identifies the server program that an Internet request is addressed to. It consists of a host and domain name, including top-level domain. For example, www.realobjects.com is a fully-qualified domain name. www is the host, realobjects is the second-level domain, and .com is the top level domain. A FQDN always starts with a host name and continues all the way up to the top-level domain name, so www.dev.realobjects.com is also a FQDN. Referring to an Intranet scenario, dev.realobjects.com is also known as FQDN.

The prefixes "http://" and "/" only complete the URL and are not allowed as part of an edit-on NG server name. It is also not possible to include a path indication (e.g. www.realobjects.com/liveserver) or port number (e.g. www.realobjects.com:8080) in the license key.

Please note, the applet will run on any machine (e.g. a workstation/notebook with IIS or Personal Web Server) under "http:/localhost". So, those machines do not have to be included in the license key. Just provide the names of real live, test, deployment etc. servers.

Don't worry if you are unsure about the names of the machines edit-on NG will run on. We will of course extend/change the server names upon your request later on. To do so just use the Change License Key online form within the "Support" area of our website.
