1.14 edit-on Pro does not load on Windows systems where the users do not have admin rights. What can I do?

This problem is related to the way the Microsoft Java VM handles applets with activated caching. Actually, the Internet Explorer with MS Java VM treats applets exactly like it does ActiveX controls. Thus trying first to "install" them locally before executing them. After the installation the browser will use the locally installed copy if no later version of the applet is available on the server. However, admin rights are necessary in order to install an applet or ActiveX control locally. This issue can be solved in one of the following ways:

  • You can deactivate the applet caching. In this case the Internet Explorer will not try to install edit-on Pro locally, and will execute it directly. You will of course lose all benefits of caching (i.e. faster loading time) when it is deactivated.

  • Your admin could install edit-on Pro on your system. To do so, the admin only has to load edit-on Pro once with enabled caching settings. Once this is done, the applet is available locally for all users of the system and does not have to be installed again, i.e. all users without admin rights will automatically load the local copy of edit-on Pro. However, the procedure has to be repeated once a new version of edit-on Pro is available on the server.

  • You could use the Sun JRE instead of the Microsoft Java VM. As caching is handled differently by the Sun JRE, you do not need admin rights in order to allow the applet to be cached the first time it is loaded on your system.
