About TYPO3

TYPO3 is a free Open Source Content Management System (CMS) for enterprise purposes on the web and in Intranets. It offers full flexibility and extendibility while featuring an accomplished set of ready-made interfaces, functions and modules (= extensions). Without having any programming knowledge, these extensions can be activated using TYPO3's extension manager. TYPO3 is a user friendly and intuitive tool, allowing content creators to produce and maintain web pages and sophisticated functions with just a few mouse clicks. Currently it is the most popular Open Source CMS in Germany and Europe.

Using TYPO3 everyone can participate in web-based communication and customer relations. Seamless integration of multimedia content types and on-the-fly server-side image manipulation and generation are among the numerous standard options inside this comprehensive tool box for web-based communication. Also included is an internal messaging and workflow communication system for shared authoring and collaboration.

TYPO3 features extremely detailed user-rights-management options for implementing professional content creation and editing work flows. TYPO3 is a server-side platform-independent application for use with virtually every browser available.

Web developers and agencies will appreciate the complete separation of content and look. Therefore, TYPO3 puts no limit on design options expected by professional website creators and is easy to update and accommodate re-launches. It is database-driven and scales easily to deliver web pages and embedded formats in an enterprise content providing environment.

Why integrating edit-on Pro into TYPO3?

Once the TYPO3 Content Management System is running, users will be able to contribute content to web or Intranet pages. For creating text, TYPO3 offers a plain TEXTAREA as well as a Rich Text Editor (RTE) control, which can be activated through TYPO3's extension manager.

Editing formatted text using the TEXTAREA is time consuming and difficult for users that are not familiar with HTML tags, e.g. the and tag has to be used to create bold or italic text. TYPO3's RTE however enables content authoring without knowledge of HTML tags, similar to a word processor.

The default RTE that comes with TYPO3 does not offer the extent of editing and formatting functionality as edit-on Pro. In terms of usability the RTE also leaves a lot to be desired. For example, table editing, selection and resizing is much more comfortable in edit-on Pro. Furthermore, edit-on Pro's UI response time is better.

The RTE's editing and formatting capabilities might be sufficient for small scale installations, but larger TYPO3 installations certainly require enhanced enterprise level features, which are not yet available in the RTE. For example, real-time spell checker or fully controlled copy & paste and drag & drop from MS Word.

As our website is completely based on TYPO3, we are aware of the RTE's shortcomings. Therefore, we developed the free edit-on Pro TYPO3 Extension, which brings enhanced edit-on Pro editing functionality to TYPO3, making this combination one of the most powerful enterprise-level CMS in the market. RealObjects edit-on Pro significantly simplifies and streamlines the process of content authoring within TYPO3. Let your users experience the difference!

The main benefits of using edit-on Pro within TYPO3 are:

  • Enhanced editing and formatting capabilities
  • Real-time spell checker
  • Fully controlled copy & paste and drag & drop from MS Word
  • Better UI response time
  • Support accessibility according to the W3C WAI and section 508 accessibility guidelines

Easy and straight forward integration

By using the extension, edit-on Pro editing power can be integrated into TYPO3 within minutes while preserving the editor's configurability and adaptability. Actually it requires only a few mouse clicks within TYPO3's extension manager to activate the extension and the editor itself.

Furthermore, selected configuration options of the editor are available through TYPO3's own scripting language TYPOScript. Keep also in mind, RealObjects has years of TYPO3 know-how, thus allowing us to efficiently support customers that purchase an edit-on Pro license for using with the extension.

Case Study - University of Paderborn integrates RealObjects edit-on Pro into Open Source CMS TYPO3

With about 14.000 students and 1.764 employees the University of Paderborn belongs to the most important educational institutions in Germany. At an early stage the university recognized the potential of the Open Source Content Management System TYPO3. Today most of the university's Internet- and Intranet sites are maintained using TYPO3.

The only shortcoming was the Rich Text Editor (RTE), which comes by default with the TYPO3 system. By using edit-on Pro as WYSIWYG editor of their choice, the Paderborn University significantly increased the productivity of their web authors. The editor also provides cross-platform capabilities within the university's heterogeneous network. For more information please review the complete case study, available in English (PDF) and German (PDF) language.
